Currently, fitness makes up a good portion of my day, but absolutely zero portion of my career. I work in college admissions and very much enjoy the work that I do - it includes a lot of travel, some writing and has a decent amount of flexibility. I also get to work closely with high school students who are applying to the school that I work for and the college students who attend my school. As much as I love what I do, I see the writing on the wall that I don't want to do this forever - it's a very high stress environment, involves being away from home quite a lot (6-8 weeks in the fall, 3-4 weeks in the spring, 1-2 weeks in the summer, plus conferences and occasional meetings that I have to travel for) and my current institution doesn't allow for much growth. My career also doesn't allow for making fitness a part of my career - with traveling, it would be impossible to teach a weekly class or be a consistent personal trainer. How much longer I stick with it will depend on a lot of different things, but I want to start seriously planning for my next steps.
I've come to the conclusion that I really want to be a high school counselor, specifically focusing on college counseling, but also working in a counseling role for students at a public high school. I feel that this is something that I would be good at, but also something that I would be passionate about. It would be a family friendly career (if I have a family in the future...) and would make room for me to make fitness a part of my career as well.
So what's the hold up? I'm overwhelmed. What should come first? Should I try to attend some kind of fitness teacher training right now so that I can get started in establishing myself? Should I start taking classes in school counseling part time? Should I talk to my boss about what I would have to miss at work in order to start pursuing my graduate degree? I don't know where to start, and disappearing for work travel for weeks at a time doesn't help...
In an ideal world, in five to seven years I would be a part time school counselor and a certified yoga teacher, Jazzercise and/or BodyPump instructor and Personal Trainer. That's a lot to tackle in 5 years, especially when I don't know what life holds for me personally (will I remain single? Will I buy a house?).
Have you made the leap towards a new career? Are you a Personal Trainer or fitness instructor? How did/do you go about balancing everything?
